Have you ever prayed to God and wondered, “Does God hear me? Is He really listening?” You are not the only person who has ever asked this question. The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to “rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This story of 19-year-old Sivagami is living proof of the power that prayer has in our lives.
Sivagami lives in Kovalam, India with her father, mother and grandmother. Sivagami started going to the VisionTrust Grace Learning Center when she was in the sixth grade. They taught her about Jesus and she started reading her Bible and PRAYING. Her family did not know about Jesus so when they saw her reading her Bible at home they got very upset and did not allow her to read it. Sivagami PRAYED and went to her pastor’s home to read her Bible. Jesus heard her prayers and after a while her father gave her permission to read her Bible at home. Sivagami noticed many positive changes in her parents after that.
Sivagami’s grandmother did not understand her new faith in Jesus. She forced her to stop reading her Bible and attending church. Her grandmother forced her to work at home whenever Sivagami wanted to study her Bible. She spoke badly to Sivagami telling her that she would never grow up to be anyone important. This treatment continued until Sivagami was in 12th grade. All throughout these difficult years Sivagami PRAYED for her grandmother to stop treating her badly. Each time she PRAYED God would help her through the difficult time. Sivagami trusted that Jesus would stand by her and help her though it.
Sivagami PRAYED for everything and she trusted that God would hear her prayers. For example, her parents would often yell at one another. Sivagami only PRAYED for them. Her prayers were heard and the Lord granted peace in her family.
Sivagami was failing math in school. This upset her very much because she was trying very hard to get to college. Sivagami PRAYED and she had tremendous faith that the Lord would help her get to college. The VisionTrust Learning Center helped Sivagami with tutoring for math and she was able to pass her class.
Going to college was very important to Sivagami. No one in her family had ever gone to college before! Her grandmother was very against this and insisted that Sivagami go to work. She PRAYED and after a year she was given the opportunity to study for a Bachelors in Computer Science through the help of the VisionTrust HELP program (Higher Education Leadership Program).
From the day Sivagami accepted Jesus as her personal savior she has felt Him by her side…guiding her in her decisions, listening to her prayers, giving help when she felt hopeless, and protecting her. She realizes Jesus is the true living God who always watches over her.

Kovalam is located in the South Indian State of Kerala. It is famous for its beaches with scenic shores and beautiful coastlines.
- Pray for Sivagami and her family. Her grandmother still does not know the love Jesus has for her. Pray that her grandmother will learn about Jesus.

Ways to get involved:
Start a prayer journal. You can do this by yourself or with your family. Write down all the things you pray for and watch to see how God answers them. Write next to each prayer request how you have seen God working.
Are you having difficulties with something in your life? Remember to talk to Jesus about them because this Bible verse to help us to remember that God never sleeps; He is always with us just like He was with Sivagami.
I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!
He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.
The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night.
The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
